10 Impressive Purchases with Cryptocurrency
Almost everyone knows the now famous story of the first bitcoin purchase of 10,000 BTC for two pizzas made by Laszlo Hanyecz in 2010. But, what else can you buy using cryptocurrencies? Here’s a list of some of the more luxurious, or interesting cryptocurrency purchases.
El Palacio Bardaji palace
A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Spain was reportedly listed for 1,850 BTC. The 250-square-metre, 18th-century Palacio Bardaji in Ibiza is the ultimate Spanish retreat. Including seven luxury bedrooms, six bathrooms, a two-bedroom guest house, and a roof terrace complete with swimming pool, if you have a stack of bitcoins stashed away, then this may be the palace for you!
Perhaps slightly more affordable is the historic Fond du Lac #57 Elks Lodge, in Wisconsin. Listed for 40 BTC, the current owner is only interested in selling for bitcoin, refusing fiat offers. Complete with its own privately licensed bowling alley, bar, and upstairs ballroom, this certainly is an interesting piece of American history.
A Tesla Model S sold for 91.4 BTC in Florida in 2013. This is widely believed to be the first sale of such a car for crypto. If you wanted to purchase one for yourself, you could contact the company directly, or they are also listed for sale on AlzaShop who accepts payment in BTC via BitcoinPay.
SkyCraft Airplanes accepts bitcoin as payment for their planes. Their SkyCraft SD-1 Minisport claiming the title of the first aircraft available with cryptocurrency purchases.
Antiques and Jewellery
In 2016, Aspire sold a pair of diamond earrings for $8,050 USD and earned a commission of 70 BTC!
The auction house, selling fine art, antiques, collectibles and jewellery, now accepts payment in BTC.
Flights, Hotels, and Rental Cars
Cheapair.com accepts payment for flights, hotels, and rental cars in Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, or Dash. Something worth considering when booking your next holiday!
Ever fancied a trip to outer space? Well, you may be able to join Virgin Galactic as a future astronaut and rumours have it that they will accept payment in bitcoin.
Woolly Mammoth Tusks
Listed for 275 BTC on BitPremier, a site that once sold various luxury items for bitcoin.
Several universities allow you to pay for your degree in bitcoin now, with one even offering a 5% discount. Currently, the list of universities includes Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Switzerland, the University of Nicosia in Cyprus, the University of Cumbria in the UK, and FPT University in Vietnam, to name a few.
As cryptocurrencies become more widely used, retailers are warming to the idea of accepting them for their products and services. You can find cafes, accountants, gift stores, and more accepting a variety of coins.
